Have you ever……

When you are trying to entertain during a long drive on vacation, when there is not a lot to see, you play games. Often we play: I spy with my little eye, something green. Then others take turns guessing what you see.

It is fun to learn about others when you play games. So asking the question, “Have you ever?” So my question today is, have you ever seen a sunrise like this? If you have, where did you see it? This is Gulf Shores, Alabama.

September 2021

Have you ever…….what? We had to travel today to leave our sunsets behind, but we will be home in time to see the sunset at home.

Excellent quality-A season for everyone

Seasons change in our lives as well in our years. It happens fast as we get older, and we wake up to a new season we were not prepared for as we open our eyes.

Suddenly we look into the mirror and see a reflection we knew from long ago. A face that told us stories at bedtime gently brushed our hair and placed warm biscuits on the table to enjoy. How can this be?

The summer memories of the hot days and nighttime dreams of love, fun, and exciting times dance away. The fall brings the cool breeze and memories of days gone by as we face the cold winter. How did winter come so fast? I have many memories, but the aches I feel are a real reminder to me as seasons change, my days pass by more quickly.

A story I do not know the author of reminds me that the quality of our life matters more than the quantity of days. A life stretched across many seasons is wonderful if it is full of enriching the seasons for others.

The story goes like this:

There was a farmer who grew excellent quality wheat, and every season he won the award for the best grown in his county. One year a reporter from the local newspaper interviewed the farmer and learned that each Spring, the man shared his seed with his neighbors so that they could plant it in their fields.

“How can you afford to share your best wheat seed with your neighbors when they are entering their crops in the competition with yours?” the reporter asked
“Why that’s very simple,” the farmer explained. “The wind picks up pollen from the developing wheat and carries it from field to field. If my neighbors grow inferior wheat, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of all the wheat, including mine. If I am to grow good wheat, I must help my neighbors grow good wheat.”

The reporter realized how the farmer’s explanation also applied to peoples’ lives. Those who want to live meaningfully and well must help enrich the lives of others, for the value of a life is measured by the lives it touches. Those who choose to be happy must help others find happiness, for the welfare of each is bound up with the welfare of all.

It is almost harvest time; another season has gone. As we learn from the stories shared, thoughts, ideas, and wisdom, what will we do? Another winter is ahead, a season for us to share. Let’s make the rest of the seasons more meaningful as we go. We are reflecting on the quality of life with the significant purpose of creating a positive difference in each day and moment in our lives and others. We can, we will, and we start today—life changes when we do. Positives occur when we focus on solutions, not problems. Joy is found when smiles greet the day; gratitude sees what is there and not what isn’t, and hope fills the space where doubt is pushed out.

Are you dog tired?

Leaders make hundreds of decisions daily that impact lives. Depending on the nature of their work, it can be very intense for them, testing strength physically, emotionally, and mentally. Many times leaders put in long days, and adding all of this together can be exhausting.

As a leader, you try to keep the spirits up and to motivate others. Leaders listen to concerns and do their best at finding solutions. But we all have been there. There is always some negativity out there. You have that one person who chooses the pathway of “Oscar the Grouch.”

I had an Oscar. We are friends today, even after our experience of making changes. It is a process of building up relationships and getting to know the personality of those you are working with to help. I do not recommend this particular approach unless you want to use my story as an example to all staff to lighten the mood to discuss climate and culture.

“Good morning, Janet.”

“I don’t know what is good about it.”

“Are you tired today?”

“I am! I am tired every day when I leave here and every day when I come. These kids and stuff around here wears me out!”

“Well, I think I know why you are tired.”

“Why do you think I am tired?”

“I think you are dog tired because you bark all day. Try smiling and giving positives. See if that makes a difference. Glad you are here today! Smile; it is a beautiful day!

We both smiled, and this broke the ice to begin to clear the path for change. I have changed the name, but I know she would not have cared if I used her real name.

Your passion and heart lead you to follow a path of service to others. The journey is filled with many opportunities for growth, challenges, rewards, success, and achievement. If your actions and steps along the path created inspiration for others to believe, dream, learn, laugh, love, and become more, you have accomplished what lead you to start this path. “Oscar the Grouch” needs a reminder of the value of their “why” to the “what” they do each day! They genuinely want to make a difference. A little support gets them on the right path.

We can all have our moments of being “dog tired” at our job and home. It is good to remind ourselves when we model negativity in our day, it carries over just as much, if not more, than our positive outlooks. Complaining, being short and tones in our speech send messages out often unintentionally to signal it is okay to act this way.

Clear communication, establishing a transparent positive culture, and building trust for each other, will provide the pathway to growth opportunities. Your culture and climate are essential as you move forward to improve. “ In short, culture is how we behave, and climate is how we feel. Culture is the way we do things around here, and climate is the way we feel around here.”-Second Edition Transforming School Culture, Anthony Muhammad (Gruenert & Whitaker, 2015, p.10)

A moment, please…..

There are no words for this day
It is a moment in time that will never fade away
My heart provides me hope, and a belief
To look up to the heavens with our grief
A moment, please....

The depths of our country's pain
We can not comprehend again
The lives lost are not forgotten today
As we watch we know, this is not the American way
A moment, please.....

Now, as we can all gather here,
Help each other wipe away those tears
Let us all fondly recall
One nation, under God, justice for all
A moment, please.....

A moment, please….

  • to give honor, praise, and love to those who serve our country
  • to give thanks to the freedoms we have and to never take any of these for granted
  • to say I love you to those around you
  • to understand what it is to be an American
  • to appreciate our rights to vote
  • to know the importance of being involved and active in being part of the solution
  • to take responsibility for your choices, actions, decisions, and responsibilities
  • to provide support to those in need
  • to unite together as Americans, no more divisions
  • to please take a knee, to pray

A moment, please to think and reflect. Prayers, thoughts to all of the families who have lost loved ones in Afghanistan. To all of those continuing to serve, who have served and their families: Thank you 🙏🏻🌟

As a Navy wife veteran, watching the scenes unfolded yesterday, I could feel the anguish for the loved ones watching. Is it my child, dad, husband, mom, daughter, or wife? It was….every American is a part of USA. God bless

Roll out the red carpet!

It is time for some new headlines! What is the message you want to send? Roll out the red carpet and make your own stars! Put up pictures of your staff, students, or whatever you want to highlight.

Just ask me, and I can help you put some joy, laughter, motivation, feeling safe, and so much more. We are all here to help each other!

Leaders see solutions

Leadership is about solutions. Problems are all around seeking our attention. Can you identify the leader in the group when working?

If we keep our focus always on problems, solutions are hard to see. Do you know individuals who only see problems?

What is the solution in helping others focus on solutions? Do you have ideas? Please share….I will tomorrow

God bless, Happy 4th of July

The American flag has stood as a symbol of freedom and justice for over 225 years. I have three American flags in beautiful cases presented to our family as members of our family were laid to rest. Through wars, times of peace, celebrations of victory, and times of honor, the sight of the American flag has given notice to enemies and assurances to allies that democracy lives. No other symbol captures the power and glory of our nation like the American flag.

To learn facts about the flag please visit this website:

The fireworks light up the sky! It is beautiful to watch! Grills are cooking, and the aroma floating in the air invites us to backyards without a formal invitation. The laughter of children playing echoes through the neighborhood. Thankful to have all of this after the challenges we have faced.

There is so much to be done to heal our nation. Emotions are guiding the decision-making process, and we are not looking clearly at all we are doing. As individuals, we have to pause and think about why so many people are trying to come to America? What are we doing to continue to shape patriotic values in order for our country to continue to be the best? “America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”~Abram Lincoln

I am reminded today of my father-in-law, mother- in -law and husband’s brothers. We are a military family. My father-in-law served in the Navy. My husband did as well.

There are so many who serve, those who support them, and many who feel the loss when they do not return home. Freedom is not free; someone at sometime fought to provide the rights we have.

We miss all in this newspaper article! My husband, Zeke, has done a great job serving the country, family, and others. Thankful to still have him. Enjoy a blessed 4th of July.

The Needs

When you wake up in the morning, the needs hit you right away! You have the need to get to the bathroom, find coffee, food of some kind, and find out the needs of the world around you!

If you have pets, children, spouses, or others in need of your attention, then you are already running late! It would help if you had been up hours ago, or maybe getting sleep is overrated. I was kidding!

I think you understand we live in a world where “the need” is at an all-time high. However, I believe need has been confused with some other words to make life harder for all of us.

A need is something to help provide a safe and healthy environment. We need clean air, water, land, food, clothes and safe environments in order to live. We may want to have the latest version of television, phone, gaming system, shoes from famous brands, and others wants. These wants and wishes are not essential to our health and well-being.

I, like many others, felt the loss of loved ones during the global pandemic. I did not feel the loss within my family, but distant relatives and friends. The needs of others were at an all-time high. We are so lucky to live in this country so needs could be met. Even then, it was not enough as we saw politics get in the way.

There is still a need and even bigger needs in our country. It is so important to look through all of the lenses to see the needs. When looking for solutions, you should always look at all viewpoints to fully understand.

One word echoes through clearly when we talk about addressing difficult topics…..the word is fear. Fear of the cancel culture, being labeled, having negative things said about you, and the list goes on. Well, I will tell you all of that can be true.

Assuming the responsibility of being a leader is a big job. If it were so great and easy, everyone would be one! I have been beaten up (not literally, although it felt like it) several times. Remember “the need.” Behavior is driven by need. Always start with why and what. Why are they?… What do they need?…

When you are faced with these situations it is easy to fall in line with similar behaviors of anger. Pause and remember not to take it personally (trust me, I know it is hard). There is always a reason behind the actions and reactions we take to situations we face. Everyone has a story.

I always like to reflect on words from Mother Teresa. She always provides me with the wisdom I “need.”

“See how nature-trees, flowers, grass-grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.”~Mother Teresa

The world’s noise can be so loud we cannot hear the sounds of the needs calling from those so close to us. If we are quiet for a few moments, we can clearly hear the sounds coming from their hearts…the need! I hear the call, To be one nation under God. A desire to all live together in peace, harmony–equally in a safe and secure environment.

We have survived so much, won many battles, achieved so much, and have so much more to do together. Listen to the silent voices as they speak. Watch for the ways you can begin to help as you build trusting relationships. Leaders can be found in many places, not always with a title.
