Common Language, is it?

Common language is words we use, and everyone knows the meaning, usage, and concept it applies. We talk about common language in the educational world to help build vocabulary usage for students in academic areas. In addition, we incorporate common words in the use of our daily interactions to reinforce messages we want others to remember.

How many commercial slogans can you remember? Do you have songs from childhood you have not heard maybe for decades that are played, and suddenly you can repeat all of the words to the music. It is fascinating the things our brain will hold on to when it is something repeated over and over. It also helps when it has a rhythm to it also.

While working with Kindergarten students, a co-worker and I always tease each other. The kids enjoyed all of the fun we had together. When we exchanged classrooms, walking down the hallway, I would work on teaching right and left. We would begin by marching our feet, saying left and right. Then I would say, “ We know Mrs. Yoho is always right, right, right!” When they said right, we all raised our right arms. We did this chant on our way back to their classroom. I was t, saying left and right. We had fun!

Helping children to develop language and vocabulary and authentically utilize what they know to value others is a priority goal for me. The power of our words is something I want children to know and understand. We can accomplish so much when we are not worried about those around us attacking us with harmful words but with empathy and encouragement.

Word Choice

Academic vocabulary is an essential part of word choice for developing instructional plans. The introduction of new words to students helps in the enhancement of their vocabulary but also increases their knowledge as they can transfer what they learn to all aspects of their journey. When we can develop a list for each grade level and share it, we know how to target, focus and implement.

As we consistently support children’s growth, vocabulary and language usage are essential. In addition, guidance in the foundations of social skills, character, leadership, and all aspects in helping them develop all they need for valuable citizens.
