Setbacks and Setups

As we travel on our daily journeys, we will discover setbacks. Now are these setbacks placed on our paths to cause us to change our direction, stop completely, pause to reflect, or an opportunity to set up new opportunities? What can we discover by exploring setbacks?

Have you experienced a setback? What does it mean to have a setback? Setbacks can mean different things to different people at different points in their life. A child may think it is a setback when outside recess is replaced by indoor recess time. There are many more options outside than inside, so this is a setback in physical activity.

In our lives, we have established goals, both professional and personal. Having setbacks in either, I believe, directly impacts the other. It is hard to separate the two depending on the level of the setback. I will share a few as we work with the idea that a setback is an opportunity!

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction– What if we look at these actions of setbacks with the response of triumph, a comeback, and the opportunity to accomplish more!

“Mom, that truck is going to hit us! I can’t do anything.”

Beep, beep, beep. “Hello, we need to get your vitals.”

Red lights, sirens, fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, and a helicopter—one semi-truck crashed into an Envoy SUV carrying three women and a two-year-old child.

“We need the jaws to cut her out.”

A setback with a traumatic brain injury and 13 missing teeth. How can you take this and turn it into a triumph? Work each day to continue to heal. Stay focused. Do not accept what others want to place on you. Continue to rise and discover your place in the world to bring value to those who choose to take it.

Setup or Set up

How things are arranged provides the opportunity to move forward successfully, or it can be unsuccessful as well. “Let me set up success for you today.” “A setup like this will fail!” The correct spelling of setup is essential when we discuss how it can lead to the crucial lessons needed for a comeback!

One of the elements I tell all of the principals in my coaching and mentoring is the importance of networking. Having these individuals, organizations, and resources available to you as a leader provides a setup for success. The more you prepare, the better the comeback! Understand who you are, what you do, established core values, strong beliefs, and a foundation more robust than anyone can break.

You will overcome! Remember your why! Always have those around you to be positive support! It is the value we provide daily to the lives of others that continues to make a difference in the world today.
